The FREDNET LEGO Lunar Challenge course is a simulation mission of the actual Google Lunar X-Prize incorporating similar elements and goals in an accessible development platform. The Mission elements include a point-to-point remote controlled rover course with a competitive goal of completing the mission in the most robust manner including extra reward for additional accomplishments in the challenge simulating the additional rewards for teams competing in the Lunar X-Prize. Various Lunar Landscapes or “Moon-Bases” can be constructed at multiple host locations to simulate different landing sites and allow testing of multiple LEGO Mindstorm based rover concepts to be developed and remotely tested. An overall score can be measured for each participant attempting to remote control a rover on the course. The common elements of each Moon-Base should include:

- Point to point distance for rover to cover simulating 500 m travel on the lunar surface. $20MM prize .
- Time limit and score/reward for efficient transit of the course to simulate limited lunar daylight and encourage efficient travel to conserve energy.
- Heritage Bonus Prize for finding man-made object or artifact of past missions.
- Water Bonus Prize for discovering H2O on the moon.
- Range Bonus Prize for returning rover to starting point simulating 5 km lunar traverse.

One initial course layout on a 4'x8' board might look like the design below. The arrows show alternate paths from beginning to end.
